Zeltiq is one of a few new options for non-surgically contouring the body. With no downtime, it is quickly becoming a sought-after alternative to traditional liposuction procedures. This is most likely due to the wide variety of advantages: no anesthesia, no potential for allergic reaction, quick procedure time, no recovery period, non-invasive, and FDA approved.
Unlike other non-surgical fat removal procedures which utilize laser technology, Zeltiq uses "coolsculpting." Otherwise known as cripolypolysis, this innovative approach reduces subcutaneous fat without injury to adjacent tissues. Because adipose cells react at different temperatures, Zeltiq utilizes a cup with mild vacuum pressure to draw tissue into it. The device then becomes precisely cold enough to target the surrounding fat cells, crystallizing the lipids and prompting cells to undergo a process called "apoptosis," wherein they shrink and die. This triggers the body's natural lymphatic debris-collection response, removing the previously damaged fat cells gradually over several months while preserving surrounding healthy tissue and promoting a dermal fibrotic response.
Zeltiq works anywhere that patients find fat is difficult to target, most commonly the arms, above the knees, abdomen, waist, flanks, thighs, buttocks, neck, back, and "bra line" fat. Some studies have found a 20-80% fat reduction of thee areas in just 1 treatment.
Most importantly, Zeltiq has been tested rigorously and proven safe. Numerous studies show that the cripolypolysis does not affect serum lipid levels (cholesterol and triglycerides) or liver functioning at any point during or after treatment. Additionally, extensive analysis of peripheral nerve functioning, vasculature, and skin tissue following therapy found no long-term change either subjectively or microscopically.

Most patients find the procedure pain-free and relaxing. Patients are free to read, listen to music, talk, relax, or watch TV. In fact, a large-scale study found that nearly 95% of patients found the process to have little to no discomfort whatsoever. After the application of a thin gel pad on the treatment area, the vacuum system is attached and draws the tissue between two cooling panels. A slight feeling of cold may cause discomfort, but is generally well tolerated, temporary, and negligible. Treatment usually takes only about an hour for one area, and there is absolutely no recovery period. Patients can immediately return to work, exercise, and daily activity, though the skin may be red for up to a few hours, and some patients experience tingling, bruising, or tenderness shortly afterward.
Measurable and noticeable Zeltiq results appear in 2-4 months, and last around 6 months, with just one session. Additional procedures and maintenance can be performed every 2-4 months after the initial Zeltiq session. Patients can expedite and improve results by performing 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise within 12 hours of the session to assist the lymphatic system in fat clearance.
